If you have ever experienced heartbreak you will know the indescribable pain associated with it. There is no denying it… it hurts, it hurts a lot.
It isn’t just an emotional pain, you feel it in every part of your being. It is a physical hurt and as strange as it sounds your heart actually hurts.
You feel lost in thought, replaying painful memories over and over and your head hurts. You might feel betrayed, confused, unsure, insecure, lost, sad and lonely.
You feel nauseous, a constant tightness in the chest, breathing becomes a chore and seconds are never ending, hours stretch into days and you feel anxious having to repeat it all over again the next day.
Sleep is no longer peaceful and you feel exhausted irritated and restless.
What I want you to know is that all of this and maybe other things you are experiencing are absolutely normal.
It does get better as days go on and you will get through it.
It is crucial in these moments to prioritise self care and try to stick to your day to day routine as much as possible to give you structure and purpose in the day.
Do not skip meals, it only negatively fuels your emotional turmoil. Eat nutritional meals as much as you can and stay hydrated, take your supplements and do not burn out.
Exercise is a great way to take care of your physical and mental wellbeing. Walk, go for a run, do yoga or go to the gym. It is time to put yourself first so pick something that you will enjoy doing no matter how demotivated you might feel.
Cry if you need to, don’t be afraid to feel all the emotions that may overwhelm you. Write a journal and get it out of your system, talk to someone you trust about how you feel, pray if it is a part of who you are and what you need.
It is ok to feel broken, sad, angry and hurt, it is ok to miss them or to grieve for the time you invested and the hopes you had.
There is no right way to feel and it is unpredictable.
Some days you will feel strong, and on top of things and you will understand where you are and why things panned out this way. Take good care of yourself in these moments.
Other days you will feel like a mess, all your senses overwhelmed with thoughts and memories. Smells, certain foods, dates, letters still coming to your address can all be triggers for an emotional break down. Look after yourself even more fiercely in these moments. Be overprotective of yourself and your wellbeing.
Do not wait for a special occasion to wear your best outfit, do whatever makes you feel happy. Treat yourself now again to make yourself feel special and remeber everyday is about prioritising your happiness, your needs and what makes you feel good about yourself.
Try new things and don’t waste a single day worrying about all the uncertainties of all the tomorrows to come.
You are an amazing, beautiful, intelligent and unique person.
Nurture that and be your own best friend. Keep those that love you and make you feel loved and happy close.
As hard as it is right now, and as hopeless as things may seem, your heart will heal and you will be happy again.
You will get better and never forget that better things are yet to come for you.
