Relationship challenges during lockdown 1: Missing physical connections and hugs. BGN

Lockdown has been a challenging time for us all in many different ways.

Things look different, everyday tasks have required more thought and planning and our emotions have been all over the place.

However the most trying impact has been on our relationships with friends, family and loved ones.

We have seen our relationships evolve, change, grow and in some cases break apart.

We have missed our loved ones, have had to adapt to the ways we keep in touch and in many ways have had to put more effort into them then ever before.

We are spoilt for choice when it comes to communication. We can keep in touch in so many convenient ways.

Video calls allow us to see our loved ones, voice notes can be sent so they can be read at the convenience of friends and families and calls and messages are instantly received.

The one thing we have all missed the most (some more so than others) is the comfort of physical touch.

A warm reassuring hug when we are worried and sad.

Holding hands, a pat on the shoulder, the soft little touches here and there, its the simple things we have really missed.

All the comforts we took for granted is what we craved the most.

If you are a very affectionate person and express yourself through touch, the limitations of physical contact and social distancing may have been particularly challenging.

Some of us naturally go in for a hug or a strong handshake and have had to consciously remind ourselves not to.

Everyday social interactions may have been more awkward and we have been hesitant and slightly confused.

Children have had to be reminded not to run in for hugs if they see someone on the street and they more than anyone have found the whole concept of no physical contact very confusing and at times worrying and scary.

I am sure once we are able to move more freely and interact in a more familiar and less restricted way, we will never take hugs for granted again.

This also helps us view our relationships and see them in a different light.

It allows us to see how we like to express love and how we like to recieve it.

So use this time to reflect on your relationships.

How we can best express this love and that under all circumstances we must put effort into the relationships we value regardless of the circumstances that surround us.

The people we love are waiting to give and receive the hugs we have so desperately missed.

You have all done so well and you deserve every hug you have ever needed these past few months.

reflect. love. heal always
